Recreation Specialist Patrick Murphy’s goal is to keep residents happy and active through sports. One of his favorite sports to play is pickleball, in fact, he’s working on making it an official State sport.

What do you do?

I create, schedule, organize and implement most of the recreational sports for the City. Some of the recreational sports I work with are basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, and pickleball. I am also the Region 1 Director and Assistant State Youth Basketball Commissioner.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy creating activities for all ages 3 to 99. I’m a sports fan (Astros, Spurs, and Cowboys) and I like being active and helping people keep active. I’ve now worked for the City of League City for over 6 years.

What’s your background?

I’ve done recreation and sports for over 20 years. I grew up in Austin and graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Recreation Leisure and Services Administration.

Before working for League City, I worked in recreation therapy programs and worked for the City of Granbury for 6 years.

Tell us about how you work with pickleball:

I coordinate tournaments and leagues for pickleball. I’m on the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) “Innovations in Sports” committee and we’re trying to make pickleball a state sport for TAAF. There’s currently no state championship for pickleball and the sport is growing so much. We have about 300 people that play pickleball here, and we recently held a team state championship League City with people from all over Texas.

Do you play pickleball?

Yes, I’m addicted to it, or that’s what my family says. I started playing three years ago with some of the seniors and went to my first tournament in 2017 at the Houston badminton center.

I try to play at least three times a week. Unlike tennis, it’s not as physically demanding on my body, but I still get enough exercise. The game is a cross between tennis and table tennis.

What do you like doing when you’re not at work?

I like playing pickleball, and I play handbells and percussion. I’ve played since I was in high school. I’ve done solos on handbells and I played for the Houston bronze ensemble.

I used to direct children’s choir and I taught my kids to play with me.

Fun fact about yourself?

I am a Star Wars nerd. I still have my collection of Star Wars figures.

Family life:

I am married with four kids ages 17, 19, 24 and 25. Also, we have 3 rescue dachshund dogs. Our Harvey rescue dog’s name is Han Solo.

Three words to describe yourself:

Caring, loyal, and friendly.
