While at work, Treasury Manager Quencelia Goins loves to crunch numbers, but outside of work, she’s known as the “Madea of Volleyball.” She has a passion for the sport, and when she’s not courtside refereeing volleyball games for girls, she’s traveling the world.
What do you do?
As the treasury manager, I’m responsible for cash management, City revenue coming in and going out, and daily operations. Basically, I work with the money! I love my job and I love the people I work with.
How long have you worked in League City and how did you start here?
I’ve worked for the City for 25 years. I came from the Houston area from an accounting job and made my way to League City, which I knew nothing about at the time, but I loved it and I’ve been here ever since. I started as a senior accountant, then accounting manager and now treasury manager. I’ve always enjoyed solving number problems, it’s like a puzzle that you’re trying to solve.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from New Orleans. I received a volleyball scholarship to Magnese State University in Lake Charles and studied accounting there. I was able to graduate in two and a half years at 20 years old.
Do you still enjoy volleyball?
I love volleyball, and I especially love spiking. I stopped playing a few years ago to become a referee. Twenty years ago, I was playing volleyball on a ladies’ team and I started refereeing their volleyball games. After that, I went to ref girls’ volleyball ages 11 to 18 for the United States Volleyball League.
What do you enjoy about being a referee?
You get to be an example of how to act accordingly and you can see the girls develop and grow as athletes. The parents are the most challenging to work with (laughs), but I feel like I’m the fun ref that laughs and has fun while still knowing the rules and being straight forward. I’m the Madea of volleyball!
Hobbies outside of work?
I love the movies, dancing, bowling, going to concerts, and I travel a lot. Traveling is probably my favorite thing.
Where have you traveled to?
I’ve traveled to Africa, Greece, Spain, Italy, Rome, Paris, all over the Caribbean, Aruba, and a lot of places in the United States. I try to travel four to five times a year with my husband, family, and friends. You learn about different cultures wherever you go and capture the beauty of every place you go to. I’m going to Bermuda this year and still want to go to Australia and Brazil in the future.
Fun fact about yourself?
I love to play games, board games, Taboo, and old games like Twister. I also love to go to the movies. If you’re looking for me, you can always find me at the movie theater.
Describe yourself in three words:
Honest, dedicated, and hard-working.
